Hello all parents!  We’re talking about a topic that concerns us all:

CHILDHOOD ANXIETY :

It’s a sneaky gremlin, isn’t it? One minute your child is jumping off the walls, the next he’s a bundle of nerves, worried about everything from his upcoming spelling test to the possibility of failing a competition.

At salientkids.blogspot.com  we strive to raise resilient little people, and one-on-one anxiety treatment is an integral part of that.  Kids manifest anxiety in a variety of strange ways. Sometimes it’s just a stomach ache and a headache.  Other times it’s a sudden aversion to things they once loved, or maybe they’re just grumpy – a real grump.

Think sleepless nights, a million “what ifs” running through their heads, avoiding anything that seems even slightly scary… it’s a whole spectrum.
And while a little worry is perfectly normal (we all have our moments!), constant anxiety can really ruin everything.

So, what can we do?

Well, as parents, we are the superheroes in this story!
Here are some practical, hands-on strategies that have worked wonders for us and our families.

1. Let’s talk about our feelings:

Instead of dismissing their worries with a “Don’t worry,” try something like “Wow, that sounds really hard. Tell me more.”  Validating their feelings is like giving them a warm hug: they feel safe and understood.

2. Breathe, breathe (and have fun!):
Deep breathing is a game-changer. We play a silly game with our kids, counting together: four counts of inhaling, four counts of holding, and six counts of exhaling slowly.

It’s amazing how quickly it can calm things down.

 3. Routine is your friend:

Kids need predictability. Think of routine as a cozy blanket for a cold night. Regular mealtimes, bedtimes, and even playtime patterns can provide a sense of security that helps them manage stress and anxiety.

4. Facing fear, one small step at a time:

Avoidance is anxiety's best friend. Let's approach fear gradually. If they are afraid of swimming, we can start by dipping their toes in the pool. Small steps! .

5. Reinforce positive self-talk:

Let's help our children strengthen their negative thoughts. Instead of saying "I will fail", it becomes "I will do my best". It's about developing that inner strength.

6. Take an example:

Children are like sponges. They absorb everything we do.  So, let's show them how to manage anxiety, take breaks, ask for help when we need it. This teaches them that it's okay not to be perfect.

7. When to Seek Professional Help:

If anxiety is seriously affecting their daily life, such as refusing to go to school or having constant panic attacks, it’s time to seek professional help.

There are amazing therapists who specialize in treating anxiety in children.

Building resilience isn’t about eliminating anxiety completely. It’s about giving kids the tools to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence. It’s about empowering them to be their own superheroes. So, let’s encourage each other, share tips, and remember that we’re all in this together!
